Dar Al-Handasah

One notable endeavor is the rehabilitation and extension of the Beirut Port. Commissioned by the Beirut Port Authority, Dar Al-Handasah undertook comprehensive upgrades to enhance the port's efficiency and capacity. The project encompassed the rehabilitation of existing cargo areas, infrastructure enhancements, and the modernization of buildings, cranes, and handling equipment. Additionally, marine works, including quay walls and protective structures, were upgraded to bolster the port's operational capabilities. A traffic study was also conducted to facilitate internal transport, leading to the implementation of a bus shuttle system. The project further included the construction of a container terminal, administrative buildings, warehouses, parking facilities, and a park, collectively transforming the port into a more effective and accommodating hub for maritime activities.

Another significant contribution by Dar Al-Handasah is their involvement in the reconstruction of Beirut's central district, particularly the Beirut Souks. Following the extensive damage during the Lebanese Civil War, the Lebanese Council for Development and Reconstruction commissioned Dar Al-Handasah to develop a master plan for rebuilding the dilapidated central district. Henri Eddeh, a senior architect planner at Dar Al-Handasah, initially proposed a complete demolition of the historical city center to be replaced by modern buildings and infrastructure. However, widespread opposition led to the adoption of an alternate strategy focusing on preserving and renovating salvageable historic buildings. This approach aimed to restore the area's historical significance while integrating modern architectural elements, thereby revitalizing Beirut's commercial and cultural heart. Through these projects, Dar Al-Handasah has demonstrated its commitment to enhancing Beirut's urban landscape, blending historical preservation with modern development to meet the city's evolving needs.
